What are the guidelines for installing Ethernet drivers in Dell Studio XPS 8100?

Ethernet is the most commonly used LAN (Local Area Network) technology used today. It is specified in the IEEE 802.3 specification. Coaxial cable or special grades of twisted pair wires are used in an Ethernet LAN. Wireless LANs also uses Ethernet and offers speeds up to 10mbps. Ethernet switches are used to create LANs. Ethernet drivers are a necessity because without the drivers, the Ethernet device won’t work. Ethernet drivers are provided by the manufacturers who make the Ethernet devices. If the drivers are not found or installed the device won’t work and the user won’t be able to connect to a network. Dell Studio XPS 8100 makes use of Intel Core i5 650 processor. It has a memory of 8 GB and the Operating system used is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium. The tips to install Ethernet drivers and the things to be kept in mind while installing Ethernet drivers in Dell Studio XPS 8100 are:

  • Check device manufacturer
  • Check driver
  • Check the driver version
  • Check the driver compatibility with the Operating system
  • Check hardware

Check device manufacturer

Ethernet devices are manufactured by a number of companies and it is imperative that the manufacturer of the Ethernet device be known before installing the driver. If a driver provided by a different manufacturer is used, the Ethernet might not function properly. Presently companies like Intel, Atheros, Realtek etc. provide Ethernet controllers and their drivers. Usually the drivers for a specific Ethernet controller are provided with it and there is no need to download the drivers separately.

Check driver

Before we try to install a driver for a specific Ethernet controller it is required to check whether any other is installed. If such a driver is installed and if the device works properly then there is no need to update the driver. In case a driver is installed and if the device does not work properly then we need to uninstall the current driver and install the correct driver for the device.

Check the driver version

The Ethernet controller usually ships in with a utility CD that includes a driver for the controller; usually this particular driver is used. If in situations where the current driver does not work, it is required to check for newer versions of the driver. The current version of the installed driver can be found in the device manager of the Operating system. Once the version of the driver is known we can check if a newer version exists, if it exists then you can download and install it.

Check the driver compatibility with the Operating system

The driver supplied with the device might not be compatible with Operating system installed in the system. This might be because the driver was compatible with the older Operating system and incompatible with the newer Operating system. This situation arises when the newer Operating system is from a different manufacturer. If a certain driver is incompatible it is advisable to contact the manufacturer for a driver that is correct for the device.

Check hardware

Suppose even after installing the correct driver for the Ethernet controller, it still does not work then the problem might not be with the driver .The controller might be faulty and might need to be replaced. If such a scenario does occur, it is better to contact the manufacturer and get it serviced or replaced.
