Ups the diversification ante with the likes of HP and Cisco

Dell to acquire Force10Continuing with its vision of keeping its consumer at the center of its strategy, Dell has announced, an agreement to acquire Force10 Networks Inc., a leader in high-performance data networking. According to the statement released by Dell, the networking technology of Force10 compliments the server capabilities of Dell develops. Together with Force10, Dell plans to provide its customers products and services of a broader spectrum. The companies didn’t disclose the terms of the agreement.

Force10 Networks is a world renowned provider of easy to manage and low-cost data communication networks. The company’s data centers are in 60 countries worldwide. Formed in 1999, the company’s leading customers include Web 2.0 and Fortune 100 companies.

The acquisition of Force10 comes just five months after Dell acquired Compellent Technologies Inc., a rapidly growing highly-virtualized storage solutions provider. The fluid data technology that Compellent offers expands the award winning enterprise storage solutions Dell possesses.

To add to that, now, the prospective acquisition of Force10 signifies the diversification of Dell to move beyond its forte of developing personal computers and servers. With these acquisitions at place, the companies plan to offer customers solutions that would offer optimized performance with limited costs and resources.

The acquisition of Force 10 also spurs up the competition of Dell, with the likes of HP and Cisco. Both eth companies have also made recent acquisitions to diversify their portfolio of products. Dell lost the bid to acquire 3Par to HP during the end of last year. HP also acquired Vertica Systems in the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, in April, Cisco completed the acquisition of newScale, a company that develops self-service, service catalog, and lifecycle management software.

It seems that the trend of big companies acquiring smaller, yet rapidly growing companies will continue for some more time to come. However, the acquisition of Force10 Networks Inc., will give a new dimension to the products of Dell.
