Do you want to use the HDMI® output of the Dell Alienware®Area-51® to connect to a TV set or to a bigger LCD monitor? Are you wondering which problems you may encounter and how to resolve them?

The HDMI® output of the Dell Alienware®Area-51®desktop is an extremely good option if you want to opt for a much bigger screen for playing games or if you want to use the desktop as a media center. Dell Alienware®Area-51® can play HD content at high frame rates with extremely good audio. There are certain things that you need to consider to successfully connect your Dell Alienware®Area-51® desktop to an HDTV set using an HDMI® cable.

Things you need to consider before connecting the HDMI® port are as follows:

  • Connector types
  • Cable type and length
  • Enabling the hardware

Connector types

Unlike VGA, which has a standard size and connections used in all hardware, HDMI® has four types of connectors that device manufacturers can use. You should check the type of connector on the HDTV and see to it that the cables you get have the right connectors on both ends. The same is also true when connecting to LCD monitors. Although some may have HDMI® ports, most carry a DVI port. This is electrically compatible with HDMI® though and you only need to purchase a corresponding converter.

Cable type and length

Another thing to consider is the type of cable you want to use and the length. Category 1 cables are the standard but you may want to get a category 2 cable if you want to use it for high speed/bandwidth applications. There is no maximum length specified in the standard but in order to ensure that your connection performs nicely and is quite reliable, you should not exceed 5 meters. The length should be good enough for most uses, unless you want to keep your desktop in another room.

Enabling the hardware

The last thing to consider is getting the hardware to display the connected LCD monitor or HDTV. Depending on the operating system you use, the added hardware can often be recognized by the system immediately, you would then need to indicate whether you want to span the display, duplicate it, or just use one screen at a time. The latter is the best option if you just want to use the bigger screen as you would be extending the life of the display.
